Homes in residential neighbourhoods of Georgian Bluffs are allowed to keep backyard chickens. The by-law allows for up to 6 hens on properties that are at least 0.2 hectares (.5 acres) in size. Chickens can be a local source of fresh eggs, and also help with pest control and provide natural fertilizer for gardens. The Township of Georgian Bluffs has approved a new by-law to allow homes to keep backyard chickens in residential areas, reflecting community feedback and support. Agricultural and Rural properties larger that 0.8 hectares (2 acres) have always been allowed to keep poultry as part of a typical agricultural operation.

Eligibility and Requirements
Residential Zones: Backyard chickens are permitted in Agricultural, Rural, Residential, and Shoreline Residential zones on lots larger than 0.2 hectares.
There is a maximum of six hens per household.
Roosters are not permitted.
Chickens are for personal use only; selling chickens or eggs is not allowed.
Home slaughtering of chickens is not permitted.
Coop and Enclosure Specifications
Coop Size: Maximum of 10 square metres in total floor area.
Coop Location: Must be at least 10 metres from any adjacent dwelling.
Space Requirements: Each chicken must have at least 0.4 square metres of coop space and 1 square metre of covered outdoor enclosure.
Construction: Coops must be built to provide shelter, light, and ventilation, and be secure against predators.
Waste Management
Manure must be stored in an enclosed container, with no more than 0.5 cubic metres stored at any time. Unused manure must be disposed of properly through the municipal waste management program.
