Georgian Bluffs will be expanding the FoodCycler indoor composting program in 2024 pending budget approval, following a successful 12-week pilot that resulted in reduced food waste and a smaller carbon footprint for 100 households.
The pilot program, which ran from July to September, saw participants tracking their use of FoodCycler indoor composting units that were purchased at a discounted rate. It resulted in participants diverting 27.9 metric tonnes (MT) of food waste from landfills each year. This corresponds to a decrease of 36.3 MT in CO2 annually, equivalent to removing 8.1 gasoline-powered vehicles from the roads.
Participants also reported a notable decrease in their garbage production, leading to 16.1 fewer bags per household per year transported to landfills. Reflecting the community's support for this green initiative, 90% of participants expressed they would recommend the FoodCycler to others.
“This initiative has demonstrated our community's commitment to going green, and highlighted the impact we can all make in reducing our environmental footprint,” said Niall Lobley, Acting CAO and Director of Community and Environmental Services. “The enthusiastic participation and positive feedback from our residents reinforce our commitment to fostering a culture of sustainability in Georgian Bluffs.”
Encouraged by the pilot program's success, the Township will be purchasing 200 FoodCyclers to sell at a discounted rate to residents in 2024, pending budget approval. This expansion will enable more households to join in reducing their environmental footprint. Stay tuned for more information in the new year on how you can bring a FoodCycler home.
