Dark Sky Preservation
Georgian Bluffs is proud to be home to some of Ontario’s most stunning natural landscapes—from Georgian Bay’s shoreline to the heights of the Niagara Escarpment. As part of our commitment to protecting these natural assets, we are exploring ways to preserve our dark skies.
Why Dark Skies Matter
Preserving the night sky isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about health, sustainability, and responsible stewardship. Dark sky preservation:
-
Supports natural light-dark cycles for people and wildlife
-
Reduces disruption to birds, mammals, amphibians, and insects
-
Conserves energy by reducing wasted upward-shining light
-
Improves safety and visibility by focusing light where it’s needed
-
Lowers utility costs for property owners and municipalities
-
Preserves the beauty of the moon, stars, and northern lights
-
Enhances tourism opportunities related to stargazing and nature appreciation
Understanding Light Pollution
Light pollution is the result of excessive, misdirected, or poorly designed outdoor lighting. This includes:
-
Unshielded or upward-facing light fixtures
-
Bright lights that trespass into neighbouring properties or natural areas
-
Over-lighting that creates glare, reduces visibility, and wastes energy
Much of this lighting is unnecessary and can be easily corrected with simple, cost-effective solutions.
What Are Dark Sky-Friendly Lights?
Dark-sky-compliant lighting:
-
Is fully shielded so the bulb is not visible from above or the side
-
Directs light downward, illuminating only where it’s needed
-
Uses warm-coloured bulbs (3000K or less) to reduce blue light emissions
-
Includes features like motion sensors or timers to reduce overuse
These types of fixtures are widely available, affordable, and easy to install for homes, businesses, and public spaces.
What the Township Is Doing
In 2024, Council passed a motion recognizing the importance of dark sky preservation and directed staff to explore:
-
Dark sky-friendly lighting policies and by-laws
-
Zoning and development standards that limit light pollution
-
Opportunities to collaborate with neighbouring municipalities
-
Public education and awareness initiatives
This work will align with the Grey County Official Plan Update, which encourages lower-tier municipalities to include dark sky policies in planning frameworks for new development.
How You Can Help
-
Replace outdoor lights with fully shielded, downward-facing fixtures
-
Use motion sensors or timers instead of leaving lights on all night
-
Avoid decorative lighting that shines into the sky or onto other properties
-
Talk to neighbours about reducing glare and unnecessary lighting
-
Enjoy the night sky—and help preserve it for future generations
