Applications Now Open for Vacant Council Seat

Georgian Bluffs is now accepting applications to fill a vacant seat on Council, following the recent resignation of Councillor Ryan Thompson.

Councillor Thompson resigned on September 5, 2025, after being appointed as the Township’s new Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). His seat was officially declared vacant on September 10, 2025.

At their special meeting last night, Council voted to proceed with an open call for applications to fill the vacancy by appointment, rather than holding a by-election. This approach was chosen to reduce costs and allow for a timely appointment ahead of the 2026 municipal election.

Applications are now open and will be accepted until October 9, 2025.

To be eligible to apply, individuals must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age,
  • Be a Canadian citizen,
  • Live in Georgian Bluffs, or own or rent property in the Township (or be the spouse of someone who does),
  • Not be prohibited from voting or holding office under the law.

Once the application window closes, Township staff will confirm eligibility and compile the list of qualified applicants for Council’s review. Council will consider applications at their meeting on October 15, 2025, with the final appointment expected to be made at a special meeting on November 5, 2025. The successful applicant will serve for the remainder of the 2022–2026 term of Council, ending on November 14, 2026.
