Joint Statement: CAO Ryan Thompson and Fire Chief Jeff Gautreau
The Township of Georgian Bluffs and the Inter Township Fire Department would like to thank the firefighters, emergency responders, and partner organizations who worked together during Sunday’s ice rescue off the shores of Cobble Beach.
Emergency services responded after a group of people became stranded on an ice shelf that had broken away from shore and drifted into Georgian Bay. Twenty-three individuals were safely rescued thanks to the coordinated efforts of multiple agencies and the dedication of responders from across the region.
“Yesterday’s rescue is a powerful reminder of the professionalism, training, and teamwork that our firefighters and partner agencies bring to every emergency,” said CAO Ryan Thompson. “We are grateful to everyone who played a role in bringing people home safely.”
Fire Chief Jeff Gautreau praised the dedication and coordination shown by responders during the complex rescue operation.
“Everyone involved worked extremely hard, and it was truly a team effort,” said Chief Gautreau. “It is remarkable to see how many different agencies can come together and go above and beyond in situations like this. Every agency stepped up and performed exceptionally well.”
The Inter Township Fire Department worked alongside EMS and the OPP. From the fire service side, Owen Sound Fire, Meaford Fire, and Hanover Fire provided support and boats. Given the situation the fishermen were in, and the challenges created by the ice, responders also reached out to Barrie Fire for their airboat. Huron Area Search and Rescue also mobilized two Sherpa units to assist.
“This response is a strong testament to how effectively the Ontario Fire Mutual Aid Plan works.” Added Chief Gautreau. “A sincere thank you to Fire Coordinators Derek Malynyk for Grey County and Jack Burt for Bruce County, as well as coordinators from Huron and Simcoe Counties, for their support and coordination.”
“This successful outcome is a testament to what can be achieved when agencies work together with a shared focus on public safety,” said Thompson.
As temperatures rise and ice conditions change, residents are reminded that ice can become unstable very quickly. The Township encourages everyone to use caution and avoid travelling on ice during changing weather conditions.
