Warmer Weather Brings Spring Melt Preparations in Georgian Bluffs
As we experience temperatures above freezing, Georgian Bluffs is getting ready for the annual spring melt and the potential challenges that come with it.
This winter’s high snow accumulation has led to higher snowbanks and increased snowpack across the municipality. As the snow melts, drainage ditches and culverts may become blocked by ice and debris. With fast snow melt, especially when combined with heavy spring rainfall, localized flooding can take place.
The Township’s Public Works team is closely monitoring conditions and will proactively clear known problem areas, including ditches and culverts where blockages are known to happen. Crews are working to keep water flowing and reduce the risk of flooding on municipal roads and properties.
You can also take simple steps to help manage runoff and protect your home:
- Clear snow, ice, and debris from storm drains near your property to allow proper drainage.
- Ensure driveway culverts are not blocked so water can flow freely.
- Make sure downspouts direct water away from your home’s foundation to reduce pooling and erosion.
- Inspect sump pumps to confirm they are working properly, and ensure discharge outlets are clear of ice and snow to prevent backups.
We appreciate your cooperation in taking steps to minimize spring flooding, risks and in being extra cautious in areas where flooding may take place.
