Start the Year Fire-Safe: Burn Permits Now Open for 2026
As you plan to warm up by a winter bonfire, or start thinking about spring yard clean-up, Georgian Bluffs and the Inter-Township Fire Department are reminding everyone that burn permits must be renewed annually. All active permits expired on December 31, 2025, and a valid 2026 permit is required before any open-air burning takes place.
If you love a backyard bonfire or need to clear brush, getting a burn permit is quick and easy. Permits are free, available online 24/7, and only take a few minutes to complete.
Even better, if you had a permit last year, you’re already halfway there. Simply log in to your account, reconfirm your information, and your new permit will be valid until December 31, 2026.
“The online burn permit system has been well used by our community,” said Fire Chief Jeff Gautreau. “In its first year, we issued 409 burn permits, and the system has made it easier for residents to burn safely while allowing us to stay in communication and share updates when conditions change.”
Burn permits are required for all open-air fires, including fire pits, outdoor fireplaces, brush burning, bonfires, and controlled agricultural burns. Backyard recreational fires are welcome in Georgian Bluffs, but they must be covered under a valid permit, even if used only occasionally.
Once your permit is approved, all you need to do is notify the Fire Department each time you plan to burn, except for small recreational fires in approved fire pits or outdoor fireplaces. All other fire types, including brush burning, bonfires, demolition, and agricultural burns, must be reported before lighting. Burns can be reported online or by calling 1-855-690-0777.
The Open-Air Burn By-law outlines important safety rules, including setback distances, weather considerations, and having proper extinguishing tools on hand, all to help keep residents, properties, and emergency responders safe.
