Balmy Beach
Then...
Pictured above is a Postcard from the Grey Roots Museum Archives of the King’s Royal Hotel in Balmy Beach, which opened on July 1st, 1902. Despite having no bar and a sobriety policy, it was considered ahead of its time for being the first hotel in Ontario to use electricity. Built for the growing population of summer tourists who came by train and ferry, the hotel was renowned for its prestige. Along with the Hotel, McLaughlin Park included an amphitheater, horse stables, a 40ft dock, and a dance pavilion. Although the Hotel was predicted to be a massive success, it closed after only 14 years of operation following the steady decline in tourism to the area.
Now...
Balmy Beach is now home to waterfront residential neighborhoods, natural conservation areas, and outdoor recreation facilities promoting a balanced seasonal lifestyle for residents. In summer, the Balmy Beach Boat Launch is a popular way to get into the Bay or stop by for a serene sunset. Indian Falls Conservation Area is another must see, featuring the Balmy Beach Ball Diamond, Tennis Courts, and Balmy Beach Park. In the winter, locals enjoy sledding at Balmy Beach Park or stopping in at the Balmy Beach Convenience store for a butter tart and to see the communal bulletin board for local activities and events.
