Georgian Bluffs Opens Air Quality Relief Centres to the Public

An Orange Warning for southwestern Ontario has been issued by Environment Canada due to very poor air quality caused by smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario. Georgian Bluffs has opened two air quality relief centres in response to the warning. Heavy smoke conditions affect everyone, and time outdoors should be limited until the warning is lifted.

The Shallow Lake Community Centre (SLCC) will be open as a designated air quality relief centre during operating hours. The centre offers a comfortable, air-conditioned space where residents can take a “fresh air break” and escape the smoke and heat. Council Chambers at the Township Administration Office will also be available to the public for fresh air during business hours, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

If you need a place to get some air, go to one of these air quality relief centres:

  • Shallow Lake Community Centre – Open until 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 14.
  • Council Chambers – Township Office, Grey Road 18 – Open Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Environment Canada warns that eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, and mild coughing are common symptoms some may experience during the weather event. More severe symptoms like wheezing and severe coughing should also be taken seriously. People who work outside should avoid strenuous activities outside and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.

Residents are reminded to avoid outdoor activity during very poor air quality and check in on neighbours and loved ones who may be at risk.
