Inter Township Fire Department Enhances Skills Through Human Trafficking Training with OPP
Last week, members of the Inter Township Fire Department, along with representatives from the Ontario Provincial Police and some community members, participated in an in-person training session focused on recognizing and responding to human trafficking in rural communities.
The session was led by Detective Constable Melissa Barfoot, Human Trafficking Liaison with the Ontario Provincial Police in Walkerton. Through real-life examples and firsthand experiences, participants gained valuable insight into how first responders can identify potential victims of human trafficking, recognize warning signs, and connect individuals with the appropriate supports and resources.
Human trafficking is not just a ‘big city’ issue and continues to impact communities of all sizes across Grey and Bruce counties. The training emphasized the unique role first responders play when interacting with vulnerable individuals. While building trust in a brief encounter can be challenging, it can also provide a critical opportunity to offer assistance and support when it is needed most.
The Inter Township Fire Department proactively pursued this training opportunity as part of its ongoing commitment to professional development and community safety. By expanding awareness and strengthening response capabilities, firefighters and first responders are better equipped to recognize situations that may otherwise go unnoticed.
The Inter Township Fire Department extends its sincere appreciation to Detective Constable Melissa Barfoot for sharing her expertise and experiences, and to all participants for their engagement and commitment to learning.
