Public Advisory: Air Quality and Outdoor Fire Safety
The Inter Township Fire Department is reminding all residents to take extra precautions as an Air Quality Advisory remains in effect for our area. Smoke and poor air quality can affect everyone, especially older adults, young children, pregnant individuals, and those with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions.
Residents are encouraged to:
- Limit strenuous outdoor activities when air quality is poor.
- Keep windows and doors closed when possible if smoke is affecting your home.
- Check on family members, friends, and neighbours who may be more vulnerable to poor air quality.
At the same time, current dry conditions have significantly increased the risk of grass, brush, and forest fires. Even a small spark can quickly develop into a fast-moving fire.
The Inter Township Fire Department is asking residents to avoid outdoor burning whenever possible until conditions improve. Reducing unnecessary burning helps improve air quality and lowers the risk of accidental wildland fires.
If you must have an outdoor fire:
- Ensure all open-air burning complies with municipal bylaws and any current fire restrictions.
- Never leave a fire unattended.
- Keep a water source or fire extinguisher nearby.
- Fully extinguish your fire before leaving the area. The ashes should be cool to the touch.
- Never discard cigarette butts on the ground or from a vehicle.
- Avoid using equipment that may create sparks in dry grass or brush.
The Inter Township Fire Department is closely monitoring conditions and asks everyone to do their part to reduce the risk of wildland fires. Your caution today can help protect lives, property, and our community.
If you see smoke or an unattended fire, call 9-1-1 immediately.
Stay informed. Stay safe. Help keep our air clean and prevent wildland fires.
