Update on Historic Oak Tree in Shallow Lake

Update

Georgian Bluffs would like to provide an update regarding the 150-year-old English Oak tree on 2nd Street in Shallow Lake.

Following last week’s assessment by a certified arborist of Oak Wilt, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency was contacted and they attended to inspect the tree earlier today. Based on that review, Oak Wilt has been ruled out as the cause of the tree's decline.

We appreciate the residents and professionals who took the time to share information, ask questions, and contribute their expertise. This input has helped ensure that this community landmark receives careful consideration.

While Oak Wilt has been ruled out, the tree is in a state of significant decline. The Township is continuing to seek additional professional opinions to better understand its condition, and determine whether portions of the tree can be safely retained or whether full removal will ultimately still be required.

No further work will take place until that review is complete.

We recognize that this tree holds a special place in the history and identity of Shallow Lake. For that reason, we are taking the time necessary to fully evaluate all available options before making a final decision.

Should removal ultimately be required, the Township is exploring opportunities to preserve part of the tree as a permanent commemorative feature so that its legacy can remain part of the community for years to come.

Georgian Bluffs will continue to share updates as additional information becomes available.
