Improvement Projects Begin at Kemble and Sarawak Playgrounds
Major park improvement projects in Kemble and Sarawak are set to break ground, bringing new playgrounds, enhanced accessibility features, landscaping improvements, and upgraded community spaces for the community to enjoy.
The upgrades are part of a suite of improvements underway in Georgian Bluffs this year that received 50% funding from the Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund, through which Georgian Bluffs received a total of $825,000 supporting 6 community projects.
Construction activities will begin this week at the Kemble Athletic Field with site mobilization, temporary fencing, tree protection measures, signage installation, and site preparation work. Similar work will begin at Sarawak Family Park the Week of June 15th. Residents may notice increased activity at both locations as crews prepare for the next phases of construction.
“We are thrilled to see these projects moving from planning into construction,” said Mayor Sue Carleton. “These improvements represent a significant investment in our parks and public spaces. They will create safer and more accessible places for neighbours and visitors to gather, play, and connect with nature.”
The Sarawak Family Park project will feature a new accessible playground with a rubberized safety surface, expanded overflow parking, additional seating, tree planting, and landscape enhancements. Improvements at the Kemble Athletic Fields will include the addition of a playground, accessible pathways, seating areas, landscaping, and site improvements designed to support community use for years to come.
As part of the redevelopment, some existing trees and aging park features will be removed to accommodate the new playgrounds, improved accessibility, and landscaping. Tree protection measures will be in place throughout construction, and new tree plantings and landscaping will be incorporated into the completed designs.
The project will also include the removal of the Castle structure at the Kemble Athletic Fields. While the castle has been a familiar feature of the park for many years and is remembered fondly as part of the community’s annual Pumpkin Chuckin’ event, its condition and the planned redevelopment of the space mean it’s time to say goodbye.
For the safety of the public and construction crews, portions of the parks may be temporarily closed or have restricted access during construction. Residents are asked to follow all posted signage and stay clear of active work areas. Access to the beach at Sarawak Park will be maintained throughout the project, with the exception of a few short disruptions that will be posted in advance.
Project updates, timelines, design information, and construction notices will be posted on the Township website throughout the project. You can learn more by visiting the Park Improvements page at georgianbluffs.ca/ParkImprovements.
