Did you know that a leaky toilet can waste between 750 to 1,000 litres of water per day? A leak like this can triple or quadruple your water bill. The worst part is it leaves no trace!

To check if your toilets are leaking and costing you money try this simple trick.

1) Remove the lid from the top of your tank.
2) Add 10 to 12 drops of food coloring to the water. (Try to avoid colours like blue which could be present from cleaning solutions, which could create a false positive.)
3) Wait 15 – 20 minutes
4) If the water in the bowl remains clear there are no leaks.
5) If you see any colour in your bowl, you likely have a faulty flapper and a leak.
6) Flush the toilet to remove the food coloring from the system.

Things that you can do:

1) Check that the chain is not too tight that it is preventing the flapper from sealing properly.
2) Check to make sure that there is no sediment around the flapper valve or valve seal.
3) Change the flapper valve.
4) Ensure that the water level in the tank is below the overflow tube, otherwise your tank could be overfilling and leaking water down into the bowl
5) If a leak still occurs you may need to change the valve seat if it has been damaged.
Even new toilets can leak so it’s important to check all toilets on a regular basis.

Under this program each Municipality must develop and implement a Quality Management System (QMS).  A QMS can be expressed as the organizational structure, procedures, processes and resources needed to implement quality management and services for our water systems.

The General public can view the Township's QMS at the municipal office.

The annual water reports for the Township of Georgian Bluffs Treatment Plants and distribution networks may be read at the municipal office.
