Main Street Bridge Replacement

Main Street Bridge (Structure K‑0001), Shallow Lake

The Township of Georgian Bluffs is initiating engineering works related to the replacement of Structure K‑0001, known as the Main Street Bridge, located in the community of Shallow Lake. This work includes, to start, issuing a Request for Proposals (RFP) and subsequent tender award for consulting services.

The scope of services will include pre-engineering investigations, detailed design, tender preparation, and contract administration for the replacement of the existing bridge structure. The project will also consider associated roadway improvements, including, but not limited to, ditch work, guide rail upgrades, and roadway reconstruction.

Staff note that as part of the 2024 Ontario Structure Inspection Manual (OSIM) biennial inspections, Structure K‑0001 was assessed to be in fair condition, with a recommendation for replacement within six (6) to ten (10) years. Despite its current fair state, the Township is advancing this project within a five (5) year capital program as part of a broader full-depth reconstruction of Main Street. The proposed replacement will accommodate a modern two-lane roadway cross-section.

Structure Overview

Structure K‑0001 was constructed circa 1948 and consists of a single-span steel girder bridge with an approximate span of 6.4 metres and an overall deck length of approximately 8.5 metres. The structure crosses Park Head Creek.

The most recent OSIM inspection identified several deficiencies, including:

  • Deterioration of bridge substructures and girders
  • Limited bridge deck geometry
  • Absence of pedestrian sidewalks
  • Insufficient load-carrying capacity of existing barriers

Based on these findings, full replacement of the structure has been recommended.

Historical records indicate the bridge underwent significant rehabilitation in 1975. However, given the current age and condition of the structure, further major rehabilitation is not considered a viable long-term solution.

Further updates will be provided as the project progresses through the engineering, design, and procurement phases.
